The Russos describe 'Doomsday' as a "profound shift" and a "back to zero" moment for the MCU. They've always favored stories with clear beginnings and endings, and 'Doomsday' represents a fresh start.
Since 'Endgame', the Russos have explored various projects, including streaming films and an action franchise for Netflix. Their production company, AGBO, has become a powerhouse, producing critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.
"We want to bring something new and valuable to the table with each film," Anthony explains. "'Doomsday' is a result of a foundational narrative concept that excited us."
The initial plan for the fifth 'Avengers' film was 'The Kang Dynasty', but a change in direction was necessary after Jonathan Majors' departure. The Russos stepped in, and their improvisational and rehearsal-based directing style came into play, adapting to an unfinished script.
"The script is a living organism, and we embrace the magic that happens when actors bring their unique interpretations to the characters," Joe Russo shares.
'Doomsday' draws inspiration from the Western genre, particularly Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon a Time in the West'. The Russos' love for Westerns adds a unique twist to the superhero genre, blending grand scale with emotional intimacy.
"Westerns have a special place in our hearts. They've been declared dead, yet they continue to inspire and captivate," they say.
